Job Requirements:

Essential:

  • Educated to bachelor degree or above
  • Proven experience of effective leadership and capacity building of a team
  • Experience of designing and implementing programs
  • Proven experience in programme management, including: coordinating activities, developing work plans, drafting reports, monitoring and evaluation
  • Experience working with communities
  • Demonstrated decision making skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with capacity to maintain relations with community leaders, community member members, children and youth.
  • Excellent understanding of the complexity of local governance structures in NE Syria and other local stakeholders
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving the lives of children
  • Ability to travel independently, including to rural communities and willingness to change work practices and hours and spend time in the field, sometimes in difficult conditions and with limited resources.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken), Strong Kurdish/Arabic skills, written and spoken.
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office, including Outlook for email).
  • Commitment to and understanding of NGOs aims, values and principles including rights-based approaches

 Preferred

  • Previous experience in nutrition program management
  • Qualification as a trainer of trainers in breastfeeding counseling
  • Has received training on or is familiar with the SPHERE standards and the Operational Guidance on Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies

Job Description:

SUMMARY OF ROLE :

The Nutrition Coordinator will work with the Health Program Manager to ensure all the components of the program on Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies are implemented according to the plan, and within acceptable international standards and recommendations.

The post holder will manage nutrition teams in all activity locations, where mothers will receive counselling on feeding their infants, to ensure smooth operation, quality service delivery and timely reporting. The Nutrition Coordinator will assist the program manager in coordination with related authorities, communities as well as other partners.

As nutrition is a new sector for NGO in North East Syria, the coordinator is expected to assist the manager in identifying unmet health/nutrition needs, design interventions and contribute to proposal development to expand health and nutrition programming.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Program Implementation and reporting

  • Overall responsibility for the day-to-day management of project site activities and staff (such as IYCF-E activities in MBAs)
  • Ensure all staff understand and implement program guidelines on assessment of the mother-child pair advising the best feeding option and following up as appropriate;
  • Ensure appropriate and quality1-1 IYCF counselling and consistent nutrition education messaging is being provided to caregivers at all programming contact points (e.g. child friendly centers, Health clinics, distributions) and in the community
  • Facilitate the development of monthly work plans for the mother-baby area (e.g. in child-friendly spaces, etc.);
  • Prepare field visit plans and supervision checklist in advance of trips (find example of supervision checklist in toolkit);
  • Compile monthly activity reports and assist with stock consumption/distribution plans for each of the mother-baby areas as required.
  • Provide staff appraisals and supportive supervision;
  • Manage the reporting of breast milk substitute (BMS) violations to appropriate focal points.

Program Development

  • Identify gaps in the IYCF –E response in NES and contribute to developing proposals and advocating for programmes to address these un-met needs

Monitoring, evaluation and learning

  • Lead on technical assessments in coordination with the Health Program Manager, the Nutrition Technical Advisor, and other NGOs thematic areas and/or other external sector agencies, ensuring assessment findings are documented and that all assessments include a specific analysis of children’s needs.
  • Working closely with the Nutrition Technical Advisor, Health Program Manager, HIS officer and Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning Coordinator, ensure MEAL systems are in place.
  • Lead on Nutrition in team reviews of results and program progress and/or project evaluation, when and as requested

Staff leadership, mentorship, and development

  • Support, coach and mentor the health team, monitor their work and provide guidance and oversight, ensuring that staff achieve the program’s expected results on time and within quality standards.
